European Women's Sevens Championship

Rugby Union Sevens - a short form of the sport of rugby union - was first played in 1883, with the first (men's) internationals taking place in 1973. As women's rugby union developed in the 1960s and 1970s the format became very popular as it allowed games, and entire leagues, to be developed in countries even when player numbers were small, and it remains the main form the women's game is played in most parts of the world.

However, although the first Women's international rugby union 15-a-side test match took place in 1982, it was not until 1997 before the first Women's International Rugby Union Sevens tournaments were played, when the Hong Kong Sevens included a women's tournament for the first time. Over the next decade the number of tournaments grew, with almost every region developing regular championship. This reached its zenith with the first Women's Sevens World Cup in 2009, shortly followed by the announcement that women's rugby sevens will be included in the Olympics from 2016.

The European Women's Sevens Championship is an annual tournament organised by FIRA – Association of European Rugby, the governing body of European rugby union. There are a number of pool games that lead up to the finals tournament. The first European Women's Sevens Championship was held in 2003 in Lunel, France and was won by Spain.

FIRA-AER Tournament 2008 - Top 16

Venue/Date: Limoges, France on 14 and 15 June 2008. This was the qualifying tournament for the World Cup in 2009 (Source Fira-Aer)

  • The 10 team format was replaced by 16 teams as it was the World Cup qualifier. 6 teams progressed to Dubai. As this was the only European route it seemed likely that the Home Nations would all compete. However Ireland did not attempt to qualify and Scotland (who had pre qualified) appear to have with drawn late in the day.
  • Teams confirmed (pre-qualified) were France, England, Spain, Wales, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Russia, and Portugal.
  • 3 teams qualified from Bosnia (Romania, Finland and Israel), and 3 from Belgium (Germany, Moldova and Andorra). A fourth team from the Belgium tournament (Czech Republic) also qualified in place of Scotland, presumably as they had a better points score than the Bulgaria team that was fourth at Bosnia.

In summary the awards went to:

  • Cup Winners - England
  • Also Qualified for Dubai - Netherlands, Spain, Russia, France, Italy
  • Plate Winners - France
  • Bowl Winners - Sweden
  • Shield Winners - Andorra
